Market Madness

On November 21, 2018, Webster students were challenged to participate in the most authentic business modeling simulator known to man:  Monopoly.  The three-table tournament was organized by the GCP & Languages program and lead by Aj. Pam and Kevin, who directed the ‘teacher team’ - Authority Corp - against an array of startup students. A time limit of 90 minutes was imposed to recreate the frantic pace of Wall Street.

After the stakes (prizes) were announced and the trading bell rung, the players’ attitude shifted from that of timid mailroom clerks to movers and shakers of the industry who employ all strategic, financial, and devious interpersonal skills at their disposal.  However, amidst the smoke, heat, and broken dreams of the market, there was still time to forge sincere friendships and even alliances.

After the final bell sounded, the scores were calculated and winner announced. Yok, with an accumulated wealth of $2112 (Canadian dollars), was proclaimed the Tycoon of Tournament. Alex finished second, and was heard making accusations about insider trading sealing his runner-up fate. One disgruntled student who witnessed the award ceremony yelled, ‘this is madness!’ ‘No,’ Yok calmly replied as he removed the Cohiba cigar (Fidel Castro’s favorite brand) from his wolf-like smile and hushed the audience with a steely stare, ‘this is Monopoly.’
