Sheila Varadan Guest Lecture on Migration and International Security


MA International Relations, Webster University ThailandOn 9 March, International Relations graduate students from Webster Thailand's College of Arts & Sciences attended a guest lecture by Human Rights Lawyer Ms. Sheila Varadan. The main topic of the presentation was Migration and International Security. The lecture examined a number of security related issues in relation to migration and humanitarian crisis. The unprecedented scale of asylum seekers in recent years and circumstances whereby migration can actually pose a threat to national security, were examined.

Sheila VaradanSheila Varadan is a Senior Associate at Embode. Sheila previously worked with ECPAT International as the Head of Legal Programmes where she provided legal and technical support to a network of civil society groups in 85 countries working to eradicate child sexual exploitation. Prior to ECPAT, Sheila spent four years with the International Commission of Jurists as an International Legal Advisor focusing on accountability for gross human rights violations in South and Southeast Asia. Sheila has also worked as a Rule of Law Specialist with the International Rescue Committee where she led community-based programming on access to justice issues in the ethnic Burmese Refugee Camps on the Thai-Myanmar border. Currently she is pursuing a doctorate in international child rights law at Leiden University.
