Webster Visits Petchburi Panyanukul School

The School of Business & Technology (SBT) faculty and students visited the Petchburi Panyanukul School last summer, as part of SBT's Community Service Activities. The Petchburi Panyanukul School is run by the Thai government for mentally disabled children almost all of who are boarders at the school.

While there the SBT group had the opportunity to meet with the Director of the School, administrators, teachers and students of the school. SBT had collected academic materials to gift to the school students. However during conversations with the administrators SBT members realized that what the children really were in need of was toiletries and other items for daily personal use. Academic materials are often available to the students in sufficient quantities owing to government sponsorship.

Keeping this in mind, this academic year (2010-2011) as part of SBT's continued aim to serve the local community, a drive to collect toiletries and other items was organized. Members of the International Business club did the job of spreading the word and organizing collections.

On 15th of June, 2011, Wednesday members of the School of Business & Technology will visit Petchburi Panyanukul School. Items that have been collected during the semester long drive will be presented to the school children. SBT hopes to continue its fond friendship with the Petchaburi Panyanukul School and looks forward to meeting them.

All members of WUT are welcome to join in this trip to the school. For more information, please contact SBT Faculty at Office 21.

Webster University Thailand - Creative Writing Contest - Abstract 2011

(April 2011)

Last month, Webster University Thailand (WUT) held the first annual Webster Creative Writing Contest, which was open to high school students from throughout Thailand. The contest is designed to foster and promote interest in the creative process in Thailand’s youth by instilling them with a healthy sense of competition.

Entries were received from almost 50 students from more than 20 schools around the country, from Chiang Mai to Phuket. The initial round of the contest called for the students to submit short essays on topics of their own choosing. After much deliberation, the judging panel, made up of experienced lecturers and professionals from the Webster faculty, narrowed the field down to a group of 20 finalists who were invited to come to the Webster campus in Cha-am for the final round on Monday, April 4th, 2011. The finalists were given 90 minutes to write original essays on a choice of three creative topics provided.

While the students and their guests were treated to a catered lunch, the judging panel rated the essays based on

English proficiency, writing skill, thought process and the amount of interest inspired in the reader. Because the final scores were so close, with some ties, in fact, the top eight contestants were invited to read their essays to the audience for a possible bonus of five points.

Every contestant who made it to the final round was presented with a certificate of achievement. Additional cash prizes totaling 25,000 Baht and trophies were awarded to the top three contestants: First Prize - Ms. Mila Pencheva of Bromgrove International School; Second Prize – Ms. Siriphar Landolt of Traill International School; Third Prize – Ms. Asaree Thairakulpanich of International Community School.

Global MAIR production of The Vagina Monologues plays to SRO audience in Bangkok

(March 2011)

In celebration of V Day, Global MAIR student Anne Fischer produced The Vagina Monologues with Webster University students and women from Bangkok’s international community. The production played to a standing room only audience of nearly 200 people at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand on Monday, February 21.

The Vagina Monologues is a world-renowned play based on Eve Ensler’s interviews with over 200 women. It celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. For fourteen years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public. Its purpose is to spread awareness of, and stop, violence against women and girls. It is now performed every year all over the world.

The proceeds are donated to non-profit organizations for women and girls. This year, 90 percent of the over 45,000 baht raised at the Bangkok production will be donated to In Search of Sanuk’s scholarship fund. This fund will give young girls from poor communities in Bangkok the opportunity to learn English. The remaining 10 percent will be donated to the V-Day Organization.

In Search of Sanuk (ISOS) is a 100 Friends Project, registered as a 501(c) 3 tax deductible charity organization in the United States. In Thai, sanuk means fun or enjoyment, but ISOS wants to become a powerful mechanism of hope and healing even as it takes a lighthearted approach. ISOS works to alleviate the ills of urban poverty in Bangkok by promoting individual action through volunteering initiatives and sharing quality information on organizations working to build stronger, healthier communities. Webster graduate students join ISOS Saturday educational programs for slum children. (For more information about In Search of Sanuk, visit http://insearchofsanuk.com/.) A V-Day Organization movie about rape victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo opened the evening.

Producer/director Anne Fischer graduated cum laude from Webster St. Louis with a B.A. in English Literature and a minor in Women’s Studies. During her time as an undergraduate, Anne was an active member of Students for Gender Equality, where she assumed many lead-ership responsibilities and performed in The Vagina Monologues and A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer. Anne is extremely interested in the field of human rights. After completing the Global MAIR, Anne intends to volunteer for the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, and eventually pursue her doctorate or a management position in a non-governmental organization.

Anne said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed organizing The Vagina Monologues here in Bangkok. It has been such a great pleasure meeting and working with all the wonderful women who performed with me, and I am really happy that we were able to raise so much money for the young girls who will benefit from it.”

Webster students Lynda Aung, Aditi Pradhan (Thailand) and Mary Ann Feliciano (Global MAIR), joined the international cast, which came from seven countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, and Europe. Whitney Moore (Global MAIR) and Kaizer Hazarika (Thailand) welcomed guests. Bangkok Center Staff Khun Krisavarna Varamisa, Khun Pooncharat Khamtaeng, and Khun Wannasiri Wannawong, provided excellent support both at the Club and in our Center. Khun Juthamas Sakitjanont and Khun Subas Thapa manned our recruitment table.

Webster Thailand, in conjunction with the Office of Civil Service Commission (OCSC), selected 10 exemplary students from all of Thailand that met Webster’s stringent standards, for GPA and English proficiency in the form TOEFL scores or IELTS, to receive this prestigious award from His Excellency Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

On August 30, 2010, in attendance for this milestone event were His Excellency Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Honorable Judith Cefkin – Chargé d’Affaires and John Paul Schutte – Cultural Attaché of the Embassy of the United States of America, Mrs. Benjawan Srangnitra – Secretary-General of OCSC, and Mr. Ratish Thakur – Rector of Webster University Thailand, at Santri Maitree Building, at the Royal Thai Government House.

To improve potential for Thai youth in order to compete with global market is what I have put my heart into. I would like to see young Thai grow up to be not only good Thai citizens, but also great world citizens.  Scholarships from Webster University Thailand would open door for Thai youth to study in an American University among students of 40 nationalities. This opportunity would be like a small world for them to practice being citizen of the world. Also, I strongly believe that Thai student has competitive edge, second to none.”
