Students at any university are likely to face emotional challenges related to the stress of academic work, adjusting to a new environment, relationship issues, and the multitude of changes related to entering adulthood. In addition, students at WUT are entering an environment unlike anything most of them have experienced before. All of these issues are opportunities for growth.

Why do students go to counseling?

Typically, students seek counseling for difficulties with adjustment. These may include: being away from home, encountering new cultures and belief systems, accommodating to new living arrangements, feeling isolated, and developing new friends. Other problems that are dealt with in counseling include relationship issues, self-esteem, schools stress, and confusion about goals. Students with more serious problems seek counseling for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep disorders or substance abuse. We encourage students to speak with the school counselor about any of these problems because, experience shows us that if a student takes the initiative to find help, they usually find relief from their problem and find healthy ways to overcome their difficulty.

We would like parents to know that WUT Counseling is there to help students deal with everyday life stressors as well as more serious problems. We are also available for consultation with parents by phone or by appointment. We invite parents to call if they have concerns about their son or daughter.

What about Confidentiality?

Confidentiality is a policy and a law that gives the individual entering counseling the assurance that what ever he or she shares with the counselor will not be shared with any other individual. (Unless the individual gives permission in writing to share specific information) This includes administrators, supervisors or other faculty members. This policy also includes parents, friends or other relatives.

How can Counseling Services help parents?

Parents should know that we can discuss their specific concerns and, we can discuss the counseling services here at WUT. However, confidentiality laws prohibit us from sharing specific information about a student's counseling. At the same time, confidentiality considerations do not prohibit us from discussing ways in which parents can be helpful in dealing with the issues that their daughters and sons are confronting.
