English Requirements
Introduction
Graduate students with TOEFL scores lower than the course pre-requisites can be admitted under a conditional status. These students are required to take the TOEFL preparatory class (similar to the undergraduate ESL classes). The purpose is to prepare our students for success at the graduate level by developing their academic English skills.
Entrance with Conditional Admissions for TOEFL Preparation
Graduate students who have a TOEFL score of 510 (or its equivalent) will be considered for a conditional acceptance and are required to take the TOEFL preparatory class. In some graduate programs the students under the conditional status are allowed to register for graduate school courses or pre-requisite subjects alongside the English classes. However, some graduate level courses may require a score of 575.
Example: Students who have a 575 TOEFL score will register for two classes of a MBA in a term. Students under conditional acceptance can take one MBA class (with permission) and take the TOEFL preparatory class. These students can take two classes of MBA from the next term if they are able to reach the required score at the end of the term.
Details of the Program
The TOEFL preparatory class is aimed at improving the four skills of the English language: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Classes are conducted three times a week with additional workshops and practice tests conducted regularly. The specific goal of the TOEFL preparatory class is to get students ready to move directly into the regular graduate school program at the end of the semester. The TOEFL preparatory program is a non-credit program and does not contribute towards the degree requirements of graduate school.
Duration of the Program, Passing the Class
Students who are taking the TOEFL preparatory program can take as little as eight weeks (one term) or as long as two semesters to move up to the required level of competence. At any point in time students can take the TOEFL/IELTS exam. If they get a TOEFL score of 575 (or its equivalent) then the student has satisfied the requirements of the program and can now undertake a full course load.
Students undertaking the TOEFL preparatory class are expected to meet the full requirements of their graduate school program. There is no handicap given to the students just because they are taking English classes. If the instructor feels that the student is not able to handle the course work they may be asked to withdraw from the course and continue only with the TOEFL preparatory class.
Cost for the TOEFL Preparatory Class
The students are charged 20,000 Baht per term for the TOEFL Preparatory class.
